The Dot-Com Days Are Back! Verizon Offers Goodies for Track-ees

Most everyone here remembers the dot-com days, right? Companies offering free Internet access if you installed their ad bar… companies offering free computers with pre-loaded adware… there was even a joke at some point about some company offering a free *house* if you could put up with the ads.

Well, time to party like it’s 1999!

US cellular carrier Verizon Wireless is doing a program where they offer “rewards” in exchange for your data and participation in various marketing initiatives.

From a privacy perspective this is actually good news… it means “the market” is starting to recognize that people should get paid for contributing little bits of their souls to Big Data.
